About the Book
Raising children is no easy task; in today’s
instant-gratification world competition from unsavory activities vie
for a kid’s attention. After being raised in an alcoholic family
Walt Hampton swore that his kids would never go through the pain of
fighting for love. He and his wife of 26 years, Cecelia, brought
their boys along with the outdoors as their classroom, using
Virginia’s fourth-highest peak as their sanctuary from a world gone
mad.
Tales From Buck Mountain is a collection of previously
published award-winning articles from the pages of Sporting
Classics, Deer and Deer Hunting, and several of Harris
Publications Gun Annuals, in addition to some new material that
together tells the story of one family’s triumph in keeping
traditional family values alive.
Using family history to set the background Hampton’s book takes
us to Grayson County, Virginia, home of Buck Mountain. At one time
part of the Hampton family holdings, Buck is still preserved much
the same as it was two hundred years ago. Through adventures with
his brother-in-law Alan Todd, family members Mark and Jimmy Todd and
friend Mark Alley, Hampton paints a picture of this awesomely
beautiful mountain and the joy of growing up a hunter. When his own
sons, Wade and Jesse, came along, Hampton raised them on Buck
Mountain, reporting their progress in the pages of popular outdoor
magazines.
For the outdoorsman/parent Tales From Buck Mountain
presents a glimpse of what family life should be, watching young
children growing into men that will one day make a difference in the
world. At the same time, outstanding gun writing demonstrates the
knowledge, intuition and common sense for which Hampton is famous.
For every hunter and every parent Tales From Buck Mountain
holds treasures of wisdom.
